At Little Sunshines Au Pair Agency we are able to assist your family with placing an experienced, reliable, dedicated and hard working nanny or child minder who is of a very HIGH STANDARD. We assist with nannies and child minders being placed in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban. Below is information in relation to nannies and child miners which we highly recommend that you read through.

Nannies (in South Africa) or Child Minders are considered to be someone who:

  • looks after children in the home
  • generally works with babies, toddlers and children under 7 years of age
  • does domestic duties such as washing, ironing, cleaning and other household tasks
  • cooks all meals for the family
  • generally has limited education, and often they do not have a matric
  • often cannot read and write very well
  • generally lives-in
  • usually wears a uniform provided for by the family
  • will sometimes have a drivers license but this is rare
  • earns an average of R5000 per month for full day, 6 days per week
  • starts work around 06:00 and ends around 18:00
  • generally works Monday to Saturday
  • is generally not able to assist with homework due to their limited education
  • does not liaise with the school and teachers about the child

At Little Sunshines Our Nannies & Child Minders are Different…

At Little Sunshines Our Nannies and Child Minders:

Nanny or Child Minder Salaries at Little Sunshines Agency:
The following is a guideline of suggested nanny or child minder salaries for families who are looking to employ a Nanny or Child Minder:

5 Days Per Week – R5 000 to R6 000 per month
6 Days Per Week – R5 000 to R8 000 per month

It is becoming near to impossible to find HIGH STANDARD nannies or child minders to work for less than R5000 per month. Those that do work for less often end up resigning after a few months due to financial constraints or finding a position elsewhere that offers a higher salary. Salaries can be dropped according to skills, type of candidate etc. however the above is a good estimate for a HIGH STANDARD nanny or child minder.

Little Sunshines likes to think that a nanny or child minder is there to provide your children with stimulation, fun, care and security and to ensure that everything is taken care of in your home environment in terms of child care, cleaning, cooking and other domestic duties.

Please note that Nanny or Child Minder salaries are payable directly from the Family to the Nanny or Child Minder. The Family only pays the once-off placement fee to Little Sunshines Au Pair Agency.

In terms of Nanny or Child Minder job functions these can include, but are not be limited to:

  • Prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner for the family
  • Prepare lunch boxes for the children
  • Give them a mid-morning and afternoon snack
  • Play with the children and provide stimulating activities
  • Attend to all care needs of the children, toddlers and babies in the home
  • Pack lunch boxes and school bags for the next day
  • Bath the children
  • Clean, dust and polish
  • Do the laundry and ironing
  • Spring clean the home
  • Polish shoes and attend to sewing of buttons etc.
  • Attend to guests in the home
  • Write shopping lists
  • Do grocery shopping
  • Do babysitting in the evenings and weekends
  • Go on holidays with the Family when required
  • Be security conscious

The above depends largely on the family that the Nanny or Child Minder is going to work for, and these job functions will vary from family to family based on their needs and home environment.

Things a Nanny or Child Minder Should NOT Do:

  • Chatting on the cell phone
  • Texting
  • Watching TV
  • Sitting on the couch watching the children play
  • Leaving the children unattended
  • Neglecting domestic duties

This is, off course, our view in terms of what a Nanny or Child Minder is. However if there is one thing that we have learnt over the years, it is that every family is different and every family has a unique set of requirements. It is therefore our duty to help our families find a Nanny or Child Minder that matches their particular job specifications and family dynamics as closely as possible.
